Prussian officers up to the rank of Capitaine/Rittmeister had the right to select a servant (Bursche = boy or man) amongst the soldiers of their company. This servant continued to receive his soldier's pay, was exempt from guard duties (but not drill training), and habitually was also paid an extra monthly fee by the officer.

Higher ranking Prussian officers had to pay for their servants themselves and could not take them from the ranks.

Rilliet certainly knew the exact dates of the campaign, much of his info about Ligny comes from books.
