In this case, I think just promotion by hearsay. The info is probably taken from a newspaper article. A German newspaper of 26 June 1815 states that amongst the prisoners of Waterloo are the "generals Dumoulin and Cambaceres" ;-)

Sometimes, at least in German memoires written at a later time, you come accross officers being mentioned with the rank they held at the time when the text was written.
