Re: Year III and all that ...
In Response To: Year III and all that ... ()

I don't know if I'll be surprised by whatever is said by/about Sieyès! But I'll look... what I remember though (and it has been a while) is a strong pounding of the drum for doing the right thi... oh, what's this, money? Why thank you, yes, please, go right ahead...

I also take the point that France had a revolution to depose a monarch and ended up with an even more absolute monarch! But, it was a step forward, there were class barriers broken (and yes, new ones created.) There was a rejection of the historical monarch in exchange for the chosen one.

There was no way any country in Europe was going to be ready for any form of modern republic/democracy when most of the citizens couldn't read. Is a benevolent dictator chosen by the people worse than a "republic" of radicals that was an exclusive private club? Just what could have replaced the revolution that would have been respectable by today's standards?

But, we'll never know, because Europe attacked constantly, and Napoleon defended aggressively, including extreme measures within France's borders...

And isn't this why the 19th century is so fascinating?

And should the UK pay reparations for the atrocities of the British Empire? There are quite a few that say yes! (google that!)
