Any Bavarians that were massacred were by the local Tyrol "freedom fighters." Blaming the Austrian commander who wasn't even present was a great tactic by N. It was a brilliant move and it worked! It so upset Chasteler that he was all but incapacitated.
I can't recall a single history of the Tyrol 1809 that blames Chasteler for the massacre or anyone, other than N., who identifies him as a war criminal. I have no sympathy towards Chasteler, if there was any general agreement that he was a war criminal, I'm pretty sure I would have picked up on that.
It takes an pretty extreme bias towards N. to take his degrees on this subject as the truth.
