This is a very impressive post though I must say I am surprised to read you were, for a period, unaware of Josephine's record in dabbling in Army contracts.
I write to ask for your assistance. You may or may not know, that Susan and I are both Macdonald enthusiasts. Macdonald wrote in his Souvenirs that Napoleon commended him for not taking a bribe at Graz. (Incidentally, giving us an insight into Napoleon's attitude to corruption.) Susan says we can not give this much credence because we only have Macdonald's word that the conversation took place.
Can you suggest a library where I might find a document backing up Macdonald's claim?
