On a trawl through a series of internet web sites. (My German is abysmal. Only one year at school.) It is clear there is anecdotal evidence that Graz's city elders paid a ransom to save the clock tower at Graz from destruction by Napoleonic engineers in 1809. Some quote an exact figure of guilders, an irregular amount. I wonder how they arrived at the figure. Reading between the lines, it seems to have been a ruse by the French as they did not have sufficient explosive to carry out their orders to reduce the tower to rubble.
What does the forum think would most likely happen to the money? Would Bertrand's sappers hang on to the money? Or, was there an organised system in place to send ransom money on up the line?
