The stragglers would have been lost no matter what as they had given up. Eble postponed the burning of the bridges after the last formed units, Victor's, were across and himself attempted to rouse the stragglers who refused to move. Eble then burned the bridges which delayed Russian pursuit for 24 hours.
Both Tshitshagov's and Wittgenstein's armies were defeated at the Berezina and were kept away from the crossing in heavy fighting. Kutusov refused to support them.
That the crossing succeeded and the formed units of the army, as well as a gaggle of stragglers, did cross and get away is the measure of the win. As one French grenadier remarked, if the roles had been reversed, not one Russian would have escaped.
And the idea of Napoleon getting away with an escort was suggested to Napoleon, who rightfully and courageously refused.
