Thank you, Oliver. The Oude Utrecht article is especaily interesting.

I am wondering if the overall meaning is something akin to 'local defence force' or 'local defence volunteers', as opposed to 'militia', who one might expect to bepart of a standing defence structure- although I know nothing of militia arrangements in the States Army.

Could there be a shared lingusitic origin with the German terms Landwehr and Landser?
