The reason I like trial records is that you find out what people actually said rather than the simplified version that passes into history. When there are all the interrogation records as well you can really get an impression of character and also see how the police were building their case. The whole story of the 1804 trial is so much more complicated than is generally recognised, a whole load of characters get missed out of the standard versions.
