Simon Schama's book is a very good introduction. He focuses on the developments in the Province Holland only, though. Not so strange, for he uses most of the 19th and early 20th century publications and they were only interested in Holland. But I hope to contribute to a more broader view on the period. Some academic authors do too, of course. Very interesting (because very well researched) on a regional level is for instance Joost Rosendaals "Tot Nut van Nederland".
And there are some interesting articles in regional magazines as well.
