A military call-up record of 20 January 1813 [source: Service Historique de la Defense a Vincennes] has no additional entry under the column "services anterieur". Yet two obituaries of some length in 1884 refer in some detail to participation in the Russian campaign and then participation in the Leipzig campaign. This soldier attended the Ecole Artillerie et Ingenie at Metz. Metz records were destroyed at a much later date. Could it be possible that the call-up entry in his home district [Thalfang, Sarre District] knew nothing of his previous service in the Russian campaign?.
