The War of 1812: A Bicentennial in the Making

By: John R. Grodzinski

Anniversaries are wonderful things. They give us cause to recall, examine and even re-interpret past events. Such was the case during the various recent national and international commemorations of the 60th anniversary of the Normandy Landings and the end of the Second World War. We also recently celebrated the 200th anniversary of Trafalgar and the Battle of Austerlitz, while similar anniversaries will be upon us for several more years, recalling other events from the Napoleonic Wars.

Such is the case for the War of 1812. While we might tend to focus on the war years themselves, 1812 to 1815, the year 2007 will see the 200th anniversaries of events that led to war between Great Britain and the United States, such as the Orders in Council, the Embargo Act, the Chesapeake-Leopard Affair and others. Undoubtedly, many historical sites, organizations, re-enactment groups, publishers and institutions are planning activities to commemorate other events. Getting the word out is always a challenge and we would like to help.

If your organization has any plans or is looking for some help, please let us know and we will post the details in the War of 1812 Magazine. Please ensure you provide a good synopsis of the event, dates and contact information and we’ll get the word out!
