2012 and All That
The bicentennial of the War of 1812 is still a few months away and already there is much activity in anticipation of this event. There have been public talks, symposia, re-enactments, social events, book launches, media interest and new announcements of commemorative events, coins, stamps and other commemorative items by many groups and various levels of government. More will follow.
The year 2012 will be noteworthy a great number of commemorative events throughout Canada and the United States and we hope that public participation will continue into 2013, 2014 and 2015. Perhaps by the end, we will look back at what was a rewarding and enriching experience for all the nations and peoples who were involved in the war.
While we pause to remember the events of 200 years ago, it is hoped that the historians, journalists, writers and students will help us to advance our understanding of this conflict by undertaking new research, challenging old perspectives and producing some truly exceptional and original work.
For those readers wishing to carefully follow the countdown to June 2012 and the beginning of the bicentennial, please consult the chronometer provided by the St. Lawrence War of 1812 Bicentennial Alliance on their homepage at: Celebrate 1812
We at the War of 1812 Magazine wish everyone an enjoyable, educational and safe experience during the first year of the bicentennial of this fascinating conflict.
