Letter from Talleyrand to Lauderdale Informing Him that Mr. de Champagny is the New French Negotiator: 22 September 1806

No. XXXIV.  - Milord, I have the honor to inform you that H. M. having considered it useful to his service to retain close to his person Mr. General Clarke, during the course of a voyage which he is about to undertake.  Mr. de Champagny will be from now on charged to solely with the negotiation started with Y. Exc. I made known the intentions of H. M. to this minister who has the order to get along with you, so that the course of conferences and the correspondence of two legations does not suffer any interruption.  I must at the same time announce you that I myself of being intended to follow H. M., I will none the less continue to correspond with Y Exc.:  the general order of the service being such as all the dispatches of my ministry daily and will be regularly addressed to me.
