The 124eme Regiment Infanterie de Ligne in Russia in 1812: Maps

By: Bas de Groot

In 1898 the then Chief-of-Staff of the Royal Dutch Army gave permission to Major F.H.A. Sabron to write a Regimental History of the French 124eme Regiment Infanterie de Ligne over the period of its formation in 1810 until its disbandment in 1814. The reason for this was that to all intents and purposes, the 124eme was very largely composed of Dutch volunteers and conscripts, and so a Dutch Regiment in French service. For information, Sabron leaned heavily on the regimental history that (Dutch) Captain d'Auzon de Boisminart of the regiment had written in 1813. In addition to text, Sabron produced a number of maps to illustrate the work. This was not hard, considering that he, as well as being trained as an engineer, could draw on a number of topographical engineers that were attached to the Dutch General Staff. The maps that are included in the work deal mostly with the 1812 Russian campaign, and more specifically with battles, combats and routes that the 124eme regiment participated in.
