Marshal Suchet and the Siege of Valencia

Capitulation concluded between His Excellency Marshal of the Empire
Count Suchet, commander of the Imperial Army of Aragon, and His Excellency
Commanding General Blake, commander of the Second and Third Spanish
armies, for the occupation of the city of Valencia.
ARTICLE 1° The city of Valencia will be opened to the Imperial army;
religion will be respected, the inhabitants and their property will
be protected.
ART. II. There will be no investigation made into past against those
having taken an active part in the war or the revolution. It will be
permitted that those who wish to may depart from here for the next three
months, and in going, with the authorization of the military commandant,
to take away their families and their wealth.
ART. III. The army will exit with the honors of war by the Seranos
Gate, and deposit their arms beyond the bridge, on the left bank of
the Guadalaviar. The officers will retain their epees as well as their
horses and baggage, and the soldiers their packs.
ART. IV. Commanding General Blake offering to return the French or
French allied prisoners who are located at Majorca, Alicante and Cathagenia,
an equal number of Spanish prisoners will remain at the places under
French control until the exchange can be consummated man-for-man and
grade-for-grade. This disposition will be applicable to commissaries
and other military employees, prisoners of both sides. The exchange
will be made successively, and will commence upon the arrival of the
first columns of French prisoners.
ART.V. Today, the 9th of January, upon the capitulation having been
signed, the Ocean Gate and the citadel will be handed over to grenadier
companies of the Imperial army, under the command of Colonels. Tomorrow
at eight o'clock in the morning, the garrison will exit the city by
the Seranos Gate, while two thousand men will exit from the Saint-Vincent
Gate, to be sent to Alcira, where they will be detained until the arrival
of an equal number of Frenchmen coming from Alicante.
ART. VI. The retired officers who are located at this time in Valencia,
will be authorized to remain there if they wish, and will be provided
with the means to insure their subsistence.
ART. VII. The generals commanding the artillery and the engineers,
and the army's general commissary, will remit to the French generals
and commissaries, each for his own department, an inventory of all that
pertains to their services.
