CHAPTER III.

II.

PROVISIONAL IMPERIAL GUARD.

One saw, by the relation of the Lieutenant-Colonel Laborde, that Napoleon had started from Fontainebleau on March 20, i.e. the day before.  Although the road was beautiful and he was accustomed to traveling at a speed without equal, the Emperor had decided not to enter the capital, that day, because he wanted to give to his triumph a very civil imprint, and that it was rather glorious without his Guard.  Indeed, as eight thirty sounded on the clock of the Tuileries when his barouche entered into the court, a crowd of young men and officers on half-pay had already invaded it for a long time.  There, the transports burst with frenzy.  People, officers and soldiers, brought together in groups, removed Napoleon from his carriage and carried him on their shoulders up to the top of the large staircase, which resembled the love of the Roman legions for Germanicus; but if this time the Guard had not been able to accompany its Emperor, General Drouot had thought of forming as soon as possible, for the safety of his person, a Provisional Imperial Guard.  Among the great number of officers of all arms who had run ahead of Napoleon, either at Grenoble, or at Lyon, or at Mâcon, or at Auxerre, or even at Fontainebleau, many of them, by incredible means, had arrived at the Tuileries at the same time as him; Drouot, we say, gathered some of them and engaged them into joining together, at that very moment, with their comrades in arms to form this provisional Guard.  The list that we give hereafter will make known the names, the ranks of these honorable officers, as well as the regiments to which they had belonged.  We transcribe this list textually, not as an attestation of swiftness or even of devotion, but as an historical document, a true patent of honor.

LIST OF NAMES, in alphabetic order, of the general officers, superior and others, who left with the Emperor and King, from the Island of Elba, from Grenoble, from Lyon, etc., which followed him to Paris, and from which the greatest number met yesterday in the evening, March 20, 1815, under the immediate orders of General Excelmans, to be used as Provisional Imperial Guard with His Majesty, in particular on the night of the 20 to the 21, and regiments from which they had been employed:
