CHAPTER II.

I.

THE ARTILLERY OF THE GUARD AUGMENTED:

Two regiments of Grenadiers of the Old Guard joined together into only one.

___

An Imperial decree dated from the château of Marac, April 17, 1808, subjected the artillery to a new organization at the same time as it increased the numerical force of this corps.

It was in 1808 that Napoleon introduced, for the first time, the foot artillery into his Guard.  Later, the number of foot artillery companies was changed to eight; they were placed under the immediate command of Major Drouot.

In 1812, these same companies (of which the numerical force had been increased previously by a ninth) were organized into a regiment.

In 1813, and as we will say in book XIII of our work, a second foot artillery regiment was created, attached specifically to the Young Guard.

During the introduction of foot artillery to the Old Guard, the horse artillery regiment was reduced to four companies.

The number of pieces of ordnance being utilized by the corps of artillery including the foot as well as the horse of the Guard, in 1812 and 1813, never exceeded the figure of one hundred ninety pieces, divided into twenty six batteries.

Another decree, going back to Erfurth, October 1 of the same year, joined together the second grenadier regiment to the first of this arm, and thus doubling the force of the companies which remained eight, in two battalions.  In this manner this regiment represented a strength of two thousand men.

The cadre of the second grenadier regiment was detached with the depot and put following this corps.
