French Colonels and Colonels-in-Chief (1789): Infantry Regiments Numbers 1-20

In 1789, the infantry of King Louis XVI’s army in was composed of 107 regiments. Several of these regiments possessed a colonel-in-chief, but most units had ‘field’ colonels (of the following twenty regiments, only Infantry Regiment Nr. 1 had a colonel-in-chief).

1. Regiment Colonel-General

Louis-Joseph de Bourbon, prince de Conde and duc de Guise (born 09.08.1736); head of the Bourbon-Conde branch of the House of Bourbon; colonel-in-chief of Infantry Regiment Nr. 1; died 13.05.1818.

2. Regiment Picardie

Charles-Leon, marquis de Bouthillier de Beaujeu (born 1743); colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 2; died 1818.

3. Regiment Piemont

Louis-Marie-Jacques-Almaric, comte de Narbonne-Lara (born Colorno 24.08.1755); colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 3 from 28.10.1789; died Torgau 17.11.1813.[1]

4. Regiment Provence

Edouard, comte de Dillon (born 1754); colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 4 from 1780; died 1839.

5. Regiment Navarre

Victurnien-Bonaventure, marquis de Mortmart (born 28.10.1753); younger brother of Victurnien-Jean-Baptiste, 7th duc de Mortmart; colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 5; lieutenant-general 1815; died 16.01.1823.

6. Regiment Armagnac

Chevalier de Grimaldi; colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 6.[2]

7. Regiment Champagne

Francois-Charles-Gabriel, vicomte de Gand, comte du Ser (born 27.12.1752); colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 7 from 1777; died 24.03.1818.[3]

8. Regiment Austrasie

Louis-Joseph-Jean-Baptiste de Laboessiere, comte de Chambors (born 31.01.1756); colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 8 from 10.03.1788; died 20.02.1840.

9. Regiment Normandie

Joseph-Emmanuel-Auguste-Francois, comte de Lambertye; colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 9.

10. Regiment Neustrie

Marie-Joseph-Eustace, vicomte d’Osmont (born St. Domingue 06.05.1756); colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 10 from 1788; lieutenant-general 1814; died Paris 01.10.1839.

11. Regiment La Marine

Sebastien-Charles-Hubert, comte de Gestas (born 02.11.1751); son of Charles-Jean-Henri de Gestas, marquis de l’Esperoux; colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 11; executed Bordeaux 27.11.1793.

12. Regiment Auxerrois

Charles-Francois-Joseph, comte de Flechin de Wamin; fought in the American Revolutionary War; colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 12.

13. Regiment Bourbonois

Charles-Louis-Victor, prince de Broglie (born 22.09.1756); eldest son of Victor-Francois, 2nd duc de Broglie and marshal of France ; colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 13; guillotined Paris 27.06.1794.

14. Regiment Forez

Charles, marquis de La Bourdonnaye, comte de Blossac (born 1752); colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 14 from 1788; mayor of Rennes 18.03.1808; baron de l’Empire 30.10.1810; died Rennes 1829.[4]

15. Regiment Bearn

Gilles-Dominique-Jean-Marie de Boisgelin, vicomte de Boisgelin de Kerdu (born 01.12.1749); colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 15; executed Paris 03.07.1794.

16. Regiment Agenois

Jean-Charlemagne Maynier, comte de la Salle (born 1749) colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 16;  died 1819.

17. Regiment Auvergne

Sophie-Jacques de Courbon, marquis de la Roche-Courbon; colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 17.[5]

18. Regiment Royal Auvergne

Donatien-Marie-Joseph de Vimeur, vicomte de Rochambeau (born  07.04.1750); son of Jean-Baptiste-Donatien de Vimeur, comte de Rochambeau; fought with his father in the American Revolutionary War; colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 18; killed 16.10.1813 at the Battle of Leipzig.

19. Regiment Flandre

Marquis de Lusignem; colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 19.[6]

20. Regiment Cambresis

Joseph-Cyrille de Secondat, baron de Montesquieu (born Agen 30.01.1748); colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 20; died Bordeaux 19.03.1826.

[1] It is generally assumed that the comte de Narbonne-Lara was an illegitimate son of King Louis XV.

[2] No further information was found about this officer. It is assumed that he is decended from Antoinio, chevalier de Grimaldi (02.10.1697-28.11.1784) an illegitimate son of Antoine I, prince of Monaco .

[3] The vicomte de Gand was created a grandee of Spain (1st class) in 1786.

[4] The Etat Militare de France lists the vicomte de Narbonne as the colonel of this regiment.

[5] This officer’s surname has also been listed as Courbon-Blenac.

[6] No further information was found about this officer.
