French Colonels and Colonels-in-Chief (1789): Infantry Regiments Numbers 21- 40

Infantry Regiment Nr. 35 (Angouleme) was the only unit is this group of regiments to have a colonel-in-chief.

21. Regiment Guyenne

Charles-Bernard-Joseph de Percin, comte de Caumont, marquis de Montgaillard et de La Valette (born 1747); colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 21 from 1780; died 1795.[1]

22. Regiment Viennois

Pierre-Christophe-Louison Boulier du Chariol, comte de Bouille; colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 22 from 1782.

23. Regiment du Roi

The ‘Etat Militaire de France’ lists Lieutenant-Colonel de Baliviere and three other subordinate officers as holding the rank of colonel for this regiment.

24. Regiment Royal

Guillaume-Louis-Camille, marquis de Hem, comte de Gand and grandee of Spain (born Lille 16.08.1751); colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 24; died Paris 09.06.1818.[2]

25. Regiment Brie

Jean-Gabriel-Rene-Francois, marquis de Foucquet d’Auvillars (born 1751); colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 25; died 1827.[3]

26. Regiment Poitou

Marquis de Saint-Chamans; colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 26.[4]

27. Regiment Bresse

Francois-Pierre-Olivier, comte de Rouge et du Plessis-Belliere (born 26.01.1756); colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 27; died 29.09.1816.

28. Regiment Lyonnais

Philippe-Andre-Francois de Montesquiou-Marsan, comte de Montesquiou-Fezensac (born 30.11.1753); colonel of Infanty Regiment Nr. 28; died 07.02.1833.[5]

29. Regiment Maine

Patrice-Gabriel de Bernard de Montessus, comte de Rully (born 1761); colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 29; died 25.02.1831.[6]

30. Regiment Dauphin

Louis-François de Chamillart, marquis de La Suze (born 1751); colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 30; died 1833.

31. Regiment Perche

Henri-Francois de La Carte, comte de la Ferte-Senectere; colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 31.

32. Regiment Aunis

Hilarion-Paul-Francois-Bienvenu du Pouget, comte [later marquis] de la Barbantane (born 08.03.1754); colonel of infantry Regiment Nr. 32 from 10.03.1788; general de division 1792/3; continued his military service under the Republic in military administration posts; died 27.03.1828.

33. Regiment Bassigny

Pierre-Marie de Suffren, comte [later marquis] de Saint-Tropez (born 20.02.1753); colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 33; died 08.03.1824.

34. Regiment Touraine

Andre-Boniface-Louis de Riquetti, vicomte de Mirabeau (born 30.11.1754); brother of Honore-Gabriel de Riquetti, marquis de Mirabeau [who preferred to use the title of ‘comte de Mirabeau’]; colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 34; died Fribourg 15.09.1795.

35. Regiment d’Angouleme

Louis-Antoine, duc d’Angouleme (born 06.08.1775); eldest son of Charles-Philippe, comte d’Artois (youngest brother of King Louis XVI); colonel-in-chief of Infantry Regiment Nr. 35; died 03.06.1844.

36. Regiment Aquitaine

Marquis de Chastenay, colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 36.[7]

37. Regiment Anjou

Michel-Palamede, comte de Forbin-Janson; colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 37.[8]

38. Marechal de Turenne

Charles-Philibert-Marie-Gaston, comte de Levis-Mirepoix (born 09.11.1753); eldest son of Louis-Marie, marquis de Levis-Mirepoix; colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 38; executed Paris 28.05.1794.

39. Regiment Dauphine

Charles-Laure, marquis de MacMahon d’Eguilly et de Vianges; colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 39.[9]

40. Regiment Isle de France

Comte de Saisseval, colonel of Infantry Regiment Nr. 40.[10]

[1] One source lists this officer as being colonel of Infantry Regiment Bourgogne in 1789.

[2] One source lists the comte de Gand as lieutenant-colonel of this regiment.

[3] This officer was decended from Nicolas Foucquet, one of King Louis XIV’s finance ministers.

[4] One source lists Claude-Rene-Marie-Francois Thibaut de La Roche-Thulon as ‘colonel en second’ of this regiment in 1789.

[5] His only child, Raymond-Aymeric, was created duc de Montesquiou-Fezensac on 05.02.1832.

[6] The comte de Rully married Adelaide de Bourbon, an illegitimate daughter of the duc de Bourbon, on 24.11.1803.

[7] This officer may be Erard-Louis-Guy, comte de Chastenay de Lanty (born Essarois 30.01.1748; died Paris 21.04.1830.

[8] No further information was found about this officer.

[9] This officer was the uncle of Marshal Marie-Edme-Patrice-Maurice de MacMahon (13.07.1808-16.10.1893), duc de Magenta and second President of France (24.05.1873-30.01.1879).
