Austerlitz Tour: Getting There

The Austerlitz battlefield covers a broad area about 10 kilometers east and southeast of Brno (formerly Brunn). The second-largest city in the Czech republic, Brno has a regional airport, but most international flights come into Prague. By road, superhighway D1, also known by the European numbers E50/E65, connects Brno to Prague 202 km away (about a two-hour drive). From Vienna, Austrian Route 7 runs north to link with Czech Route 52 (both known as E461), a total of 122 km.

A battlefield visitor should have a car. The rural villages of the battle area are sketchily served by public transport, and many sites are far out in the fields. A young and vigorous visitor with plenty of time could manage with a bicycle.

Hotels are plentiful in Brno. A more restful alternative is the charming town of Slavkov u Brna (formerly Austerlitz). While you cannot actually sleep in Napoleon's bed in the palace, the Hotel Viktoria looks pleasant. Note also the "Restaurant Soult!" We took a rougher course, pitching a tent at Bobrava Camp south of Modrice. The currency exchange rate as of May 2000 makes any accommodation affordable; our campground fee for a tent, four people, and a car for two nights was $13, with unlimited hot water.
