Waterloo Tour: In And Around HougoumontBy Fons Libert, FINS
These pictures were all taken in or around the Hougoumont farm. A bitter struggle was fought for the possession of this farm. The attack on Hougoumont was meant to be a diversion but the general in charge, Jérome Bonaparte didn't understand this and kept large parts of II Corps occupied while they were urgently needed elsewhere. This was most certainly a contributing factor to the French defeat. Read more about this in the Campaign of the Hundred Days on this Napoleon Series.
There are several plaques in and around Hougoumont. The 2nd Battalion Plaque is fixed next to the North gate. The Royal Wagon Train Plaque also but on the inside of Hougoumont. The Coldstream Guards Plaque next to the South gate. General Bauduin was a Brigade commander in II Corps who died at Hougoumont. His plaque is fixed at the south wall.
