Waterloo Tour: On And Near The CrossroadsBy Fons Libert, FINS These pictures were all taken on or around the important Brussels-Charleroi Braine L'Alleud-Ohain crossroads which where geographically the centre of the Allied line.
Monument of the BelgiansThis monument for the Belgian soldiers of both sides, fallen on 18 june 1815 was erected in 1914. It is located on the crossroads of the Brussels-Charleroi and the Braine L'Alleud-Ohain road. La-Haie-Sainte is about 200m down the road on the right and Mont-St-Jean is about 1000m up that same road.
The Gordon MonumentColonel Gordon of the 92nd Highlanders, also Wellington's Aide De Camps died on 19 June 1815 as a result of the wounds he received at the Battle of Waterloo. His monument is erected about 100m north of La-Haie-Sainte.The inscription on the monument (hardly visible) is the letter Wellington sent to the Colonel's family. It is also written on a metal plaque in front of the monument (not in the picture).
The Inniskilling MonumentThis stone was erected on the spot where the 27th Inniskilling Regiment of Foot achieved their name. Although hard pressed by French cavalry and artillery, the 27th didn't retreat, they literally died in "square formation."
Picton's MonumentIt was near this spot, about 15m to the East of the crossroads that Lt. General Sir Thomas Picton was killed by a bullet in the head.
The Hanoverian Monument or the King's German Legion MonumentThis monument was erected in honour of the Hanoverians of the King's German Legion that died in the defence of La-Haie-Sainte. It is located almost on the exact spot where the sandpit used to be. This picture was taken from on top of the Gordon monument mount on the other side of the Brussels-Charleroi road. It was in the field on the right side behind the monument that the French I Corps advanced and was repulsed by, among others, Picton's division. On this monument you can see the names of all the KGL officers that died here in 1815.
View WestThis picture was taken from next to the KGL monument looking West. It shows the Gordon monument in the foreground and the Lion's Mount in the background. La-Haie-Sainte is to the left of the picture.
