Stopford, Edward (28 September 1766 - 14 September 1837)

Son of the 2nd Earl of Courtown. Older brother of Admiral Sir Robert Stopford.

Ensign 3rd Foot Guards 1784, Lieutenant & Captain 3rd Foot Guards 1792, Captain & Lieutenant-Colonel 3rd Foot Guards 1798,

Brevet Colonel 1808, Brigadier General on the Staff 1811, Major General 1811, Lieutenant General 1821.

Early Service: Flanders 1793-1794.

Portugal & Spain : Portugal 1809.

Peninsular War: Temporarily commanded brigade 1st Division July-November 1809, December 1809-June 1811 and temporarily commanded 1st Division June 1811. Commanded brigade 4th Division June-July 1811. Permanently commanded brigade 1st Division July-December 1811, February-March 1812, March 1813-April 1814. Wounded Bayonne April 1814.

MP 1810-1818. KCB 1815. GCB 1835.

Colonel of the Royal African Corps 1818-1819, 41st Foot 1819-1837.
