Gentleman Cadet Royal Military Academy Woolwich 1768, 2nd Lieutenant Royal Artillery 1772,  1st Lieutenant Royal Artillery 1779, Captain-Lieutenant Royal Artillery 1782, Captain Royal Artillery 1793, Captain C Troop Royal Horse Artillery 1793, Brevet Major 1794, Major Royal Artillery 1799, Brevet Lieutenant Colonel 1798, Lieutenant Colonel Royal Artillery 1801,  Colonel Royal Artillery 1805, Brigadier General on the Staff 1809-1811, Major General 1811, Lieutenant General 1819.

Early service: North America 1776-1780, wounded and prisoner of war 1777, Ireland 1798.

Portugal & Spain: Commanded Royal Artillery Portugal 1809.

Peninsular War: Commanded Royal Artillery April 1809 -July 1811. Invalided home due to ill health 1811.

KCB 1815. GCH 1817. Colonel Commandant Royal Artillery 1821.
