Murray, George (6 February 1772 - 28 July 1846)

2nd son of the 5th Baronet of Perth.

Ensign 71st Foot 1789, Ensign 34th Foot 1789,  Ensign 3rd Foot Guards 1790, Lieutenant & Captain 3rd Foot Guards 1794, Captain-Lieutenant & Lieutenant Colonel 3rd Foot Guards 1799,  Captain & Lieutenant Colonel 3rd Foot Guards1801, Brevet Colonel 1809, Brigadier General on the Staff  1811,  Major General Peninsula 1811, Major General 1812, Lieutenant General North America 1814, Lieutenant General Continent 1815, Lieutenant General 1825, General 1841.

Early service: Flanders 1793-1795, West Indies 1795-1796, Aide De Camp Quiberon 1797, Aide De Camp Home Staff 1797-1798,  Assistant Quartermaster General Helder 1799 and wounded, Assistant Quartermaster-General Mediterranean 1800, Assistant Quartermaster-General Egypt 1801-1802, Adjutant-General in West Indies 1802, Assistant  Quartermaster-General Home Staff 1803, Deputy Quartermaster-General on Staff Ireland 1804-1812 and served as Deputy Quartermaster-General Hanover 1805, as Quartermaster-General Copenhagen 1807, as Quartermaster-General Sweden 1808.

Portugal & Spain: Quartermaster-General in Portugal 1808 and Spain 1808-1809 and  at Corunna 1809.

Peninsular War: Quartermaster-General April 1809 - December 1811 and March 1813 - April 1814.

Other service: Quartermaster-General Ireland 1812. To command a division in War of 1812 with a planned expedition to America 1814, but expedition cancelled. Appointed Adjutant-General Ireland 1814. Lieutenant Governor and Commander of Upper Canada 1814-1815. Quartermaster-General to the army in France 1815 and served as Chief-of-Staff to the Army of Occupation 1815-1818. Governor Royal Military Academy 1819-1824. Lieutenant General of the Ordnance 1824-1825. Commander-in-Chief Ireland 1825-1828. Proposed to appoint  as General Commanding the Army 1828. Secretary of State for War and the Colonies 1828-1830. Master General of the Ordnance 1834-1835 and 1841-1846. 

MP 1824-1832 and 1834.  KB 1813. GCB 1815. GCH 1816. Colonel Commandant  of 7th Battalion 60th Foot 1813-1817, Colonel of 72nd Foot 1817-1823, 42nd Foot 1823-1843, 1st Foot 1843-1846.
