Lieutenant  Lancashire Militia 1778, Ensign 96th Foot* 1779, Lieutenant 100th Foot+ 1780, Captain-Lieutenant 100th Foot+ 1785, Half-pay 1785-1788,  Captain 75th Foot 1788. Resigned commission in the army 1792. Ensign Independent Company 1794, Lieutenant 22nd Light  Dragoons^1794, Captain-Lieutenant 22nd Light Dragoons^ 1794,  Captain 22nd Light Dragoons^ 1795, Major 22nd Light Dragoons^ 1796,  Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel 1800, Half-pay 1802, Brevet Colonel 1810, Major General 1813, Lieutenant General 1825.

* disbanded 1783. + disbanded 1785. ^ disbanded 1802.

Served in Portuguese Service 1809-1810. Promoted Colonel 1809, Brigadier 1809.

Early Service: In the fleet 1781, India 1781-1784 wounded and prisoner of war, India 1788-1792, Ireland 1795-1798 and wounded, Egypt 1801-1802, Inspecting Field Officer on Home Staff 1803-1809.

Peninsular War: Commanded cavalry brigade of Portuguese army 1809-1810.
