Hamilton, John James (4 August 1755 - 24 December 1835)

Cadet Bengal Native Infantry* 1771, Ensign Bengal Native Infantry* 1773, Lieutenant Bengal Native Infantry* 1776, Captain Bengal Native Infantry* 1781, Captain 76th Foot 1788, Captain Independent Company 1795, Brevet Major 1794, Lieutenant Colonel Liverpool Regiment+ 1795, Lieutenant Colonel 81st Foot 1795, Brevet Colonel 1802, Brigadier General on the Staff 1804-1809, Major General 1809, Lieutenant General 1814.

* army of the Honourable East India Company. +disbanded 1796.

Served in Portuguese Service 1809-1814. Promoted Brigadier General 1809, Major General 1809 and Lieutenant General 1812.

Early service: India 1778-1795, West Indies 1796-1797, Cape of Good Hope 1800, on staff Ireland 1804-1809.

Peninsular War: Commanded Portuguese Division March 1810 - February 1813, November 1813-December 1813. Inspector General of Infantry Portuguese Army 1809-1814.  

Knighted 1813. Created a Baronet 1814. Colonel of 2nd Ceylon Regiment 1813-1822, 69th Foot 1823-1835.
