Also spelt as Sterling.

Ensign 42nd Foot 1777, Lieutenant 42nd Foot 1778, Captain-Lieutenant 42nd Foot 1792, Captain 42nd Foot 1795, Major 42nd Foot 1796, Brevet Lieutenant Colonel 1802, Lieutenant-Colonel 42nd Foot 1804, Brevet Colonel 1811, Major General 1814. Sold out of army 1822.

Early Service: North America 1776-1783, British North America 1784-1789, Flanders 1793-1795, West Indies 1795-1796, Gibraltar 1796, Minorca 1798, Mediterranean 1800, Egypt 1801 and wounded, Gibraltar 1805-1808.

Portugal & Spain: Portugal and Spain 1808-1809 and at Corunna 1809.

Peninsular War: Served with his regiment 1812. Temporarily commanded brigade 1st Division April-May 1812 and September -November 1812. Commanded brigade 6th Division November 1812-July 1813 and July-October 1813.

Other Service: On Walcheren 1809.
