Vandeleur, John Ormsby (1763 - 1 November 1849)

Son of Captain Richard Vandeleur.

Ensign 5th Foot 1781, Lieutenant 67th Foot 1783,  Lieutenant 9th Foot 1788, Captain 9th Foot 1792, Captain-Lieutenant 8th Light Dragoons 1792, Captain 8th Light Dragoons 1793, Major 8th Light Dragoons 1794, Brevet Lieutenant Colonel 1798, Lieutenant-Colonel 8th Light Dragoons 1803,  Lieutenant Colonel 19th Light Dragoons 1807, Brevet Colonel 1808, Major General 1811, Lieutenant General 1821, General 1838.

Early Service: West Indies 1783-1788, Flanders 1794-1795, Cape of Good Hope 1796-1802, India 1802-1806 and commanding a cavalry brigade 1803-1805.  Assistant Adjutant-General Ireland 1810-1811.

Peninsular War: Commanded brigade Light Division September 1811-January 1812 and May 1812-July 1813. Commanded cavalry brigade July 1813-April 1814.  Wounded at assault of Ciudad Rodrigo January 1812.

Other Service: Commanded a division The Netherlands 1814-1815.  Commanded 4th Cavalry Brigade Flanders and France and at Waterloo 1815. Temporarily commanded all cavalry in France 1815.

Knighted 1833. KCB 1815.  GCB 1833.

Colonel of the 19th Light Dragoons 1815-1821, 14th Light Dragoons 1823-1830, 16th Light Dragoons 1830-1849.
