General Rowland Hill

Hill, Rowland (11 August 1772 - 10 December 1842)

2nd son of the 2nd Baronet. Younger brother of Colonel John Hill and older brother of Colonel Sir Robert Hill, Major General Clement Hill, Colonel Sir Thomas Noel Hill and Lieutenant Edward Hill.

Ensign 38th Foot 1790, Lieutenant Independent Company 1791, Half-pay 1791, Lieutenant 53rd Foot 1791, Captain Independent Company 1793, Captain 86th Foot 1793, Major 90th Foot 1794, Lieutenant Colonel 90th Foot 1794, Brevet Colonel 1800, Brigadier General on Staff 1803-05, Major General 1805, Lieutenant General Peninsula 1809, Lieutenant General 1812, General 1825.

Early service: Aide  De Camp at  Toulon 1793-1794,  Quiberon 1795, Gibraltar 1796-1800, Mediterranean 1800, Egypt 1801-1802 and wounded, on staff in Ireland 1803-1805, brigade Hanover 1805, on Home Staff 1806-1807, on staff Ireland 1807-1808.

Portugal & Spain: Commanded 1st Brigade in Portugal and at Vimeiro 1808. Commanded brigade Portugal 1808 and a brigade Spain 1808-1809 and at Corunna 1809. Commanded brigade Portugal 1809.

Peninsular War: Commanded a brigade April - June 1809, nominally commanded 2nd Division June 1809 - April 1814 but actually commanded detached Corps December 1809 - January 1811, May 1811- April 1814. Commanded at Arroyo dos Molinos 1811, at Almaraz 1812 and at St-Pierre 1813. Declined appointment to command on the East Coast of Spain 1813. Wounded at Talavera July 1809.

Other Service: Declined command in War of 1812 of a planned expedition to North America 1814. Commanded II Corps Flanders and France and at Waterloo 1815. Commanded the infantry and then second-in-command of British Contingent of the Army of Occupation 1815-1818. Commander-in-Chief of the British Army 1828-1842.
