Brownrigg, Robert (1759? - 27 April 1833)

Brother of Lieutenant John Brownrigg, Colonel Thomas Brownrigg and Lieutenant Colonel Henry Brownrigg.

Ensign 14th Foot 1775, Lieutenant 14th Foot 1778, Captain 100th Foot* 1784, Captain 35th Foot 1784, Captain 52nd Foot 1786, Captain 49th Foot 1790, Brevet Major 1790, Lieutenant Colonel 88th Foot 1793, Captain & Lieutenant Colonel Coldstream Foot Guards 1795, Brevet Colonel 1796, Major General 1802, Lieutenant General 1808, General 1819.

*disbanded 1785.

Early Service: North America 1776, in the fleet 1780-1781, West Indies 1782-1784. Deputy Adjutant General West Indies 1790. A Commandant and Paymaster Home Staff 1790-1793.

Service 1793-1815: Deputy Quartermaster-General continent 1793-1795. Military Secretary to the Conmmander-in-Chief 1795-1803 and Helder 1799. Quartermaster-General to the forces 1803-1811 and Walcheren 1809. Governor and Commander-in-Chief Ceylon 1811-1815 and 2nd Kandyan War 1815.

Other Service:  Governor and Commander-in-Chief Ceylon 1816-1820

GCB 1815. Created a baronet 1816.

Colonel-Commandant of 6th Battalion 60th Foot 1799-1805, Colonel of 9th Foot 1805-1833.
