Chatham, John Pitt 2nd Earl of (10 September 1756 - 24 September 1835)

Son of William Pitt (the Elder), 1st Earl of Chatham, Prime Minister. Older brother of William Pitt the Younger, Prime Minister and Captain James Pitt RN.

Styled as Lord Pitt 1766-1778.

Ensign 47th Foot 1774, resigned army 1776, Lieutenant 39th Foot 1778, Captain 35th Foot 1779, Captain 86th Foot* 1779, Captain-Lieutenant & Lieutenant Colonel  3rd Foot Guards 1782, resigned commission 1784, Brevet Colonel 1793, Major General 1795, Lieutenant General 1802, General 1812.

*disbanded 1784.

Early Service: North America 1774-1776. Gibraltar 1779-1783.

Service 1793-1815: First Lord of the Admiralty 1788-1796, on Home staff 1797-1799, Helder 1799 and wounded, on Home Staff 1803,  Master General of the Ordnance 1801-1806, 1807-1810,  Commander-in-Chief Walcheren Expedition 1809,  on Home Staff 1809-1814.

Later Service: Governor of Gibraltar 1820-1835.

KG 1790. Succeeded as 2nd Earl of Chatham 1778.

Colonel Commandant and Colonel  of the 4th Foot 1799-1835
