Ensign 30th Foot 1763, Lieutenant 30th Foot 1769, Captain 47th Foot 1771, Major 82nd Foot 1777, Lieutenant Colonel 82nd 1781, Lieutenant Colonel 16th Foot 1783, Brevet Colonel 1790,  Major General 1794, Lieutenant General 1801, General Mediterranean 1805, General Canada 1807, General 1812.

Early Service: Aide-de-Camp Gibraltar 1770, North America 1774-1781 and twice wounded..

Service 1793-1815: on Home Staff 1793, Flanders 1793-1795and Adjutant-General 1793, captured Cape of Good Hope and Commander-in-Chief 1795-1797, on staff Bengal Presidency India 1798-1801, on Home Staff 1803-1805, Commander-in-Chief Mediterranean 1805-1806, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief  British North America 1807-1811.

Colonel of the 46th Foot 1795-1804, 86th Foot 1804-1806, 22nd Foot 1806-1809, 78th Foot 1809-1812.
