Ensign 1st Foot Guards 1775,  Lieutenant and Captain 1st Foot Guards 1778,  Captain and Lieutenant Colonel 1st Foot Guards 1783, Lieutenant Colonel 45th Foot 1783,  Lieutenant Colonel 1st Foot 1787, Brevet Colonel 1793, Major General 1795, Lieutenant General Cape of Good Hope  1801, Lieutenant General 1802, General 1812.

Early Service: North America 1777-1783 and prisoner of war 1781-1783. West Indies 1789-1791.

Service 1793-1815: West Indies 1794 as Adjutant General.  Home Staff 1795-1796. Commanding at Cape of Good Hope 1796 -1802  and Lieutenant Governor 1798-1802 and acting Governor 1801-1802. Home Staff 1803-1812 and a division Hanover 1805.

Aide-de-Camp to the King 1793.

Colonel Commandant and Colonel Scotch Brigade (later 94th Foot) 1794-1809, Colonel  71st Foot 1809-1824.
