Harrington, Charles Stanhope 3rd Earl of  (17 or 20 March 1753 - 14 or 15 September 1829)

Eldest son of General William Stanhope 2nd Earl of Harrington. Older brother of  Colonel Henry Stanhope.

Styled as Viscount Petersham 1756-1779.

Ensign Coldstream Guards 1769, Captain 29th Foot 1773, Captain & Lieutenant Colonel 3rd Foot Guards 1778,  Lieutenant Colonel 85th Foot* 1779, Brevet Colonel 1782, Brigadier General Jamaica 1780-1782, Major General 1793, Lieutenant General 1798, General 1803.

*disbanded 1783

Early Service: North America 1776-1777 as Aide-de-Camp,  West Indies 1780-1782, Ireland 1783-1785.  Brigadier General Bagshot Heath 1792.

Service 1793-1815:  on Home Staff 1798-1802, 1803-1805,  Commander-in-Chief of  Ireland 1805-1812.

ADC to the King 1782. MP 1774-1779. GCH 1816. Succeeded as 3rd Earl of Harrington 1779.

Lieutenant Colonel Commandant 85th Foot 1779-1783, Colonel of the 65th Foot 1783-1788, 29th Foot 1788-1792,  1st Regiment of Life Guards 1792-1829.
