Hewett, George (11 June 1750 - 21 March 1840)

Also as George Hewitt.

Son of Major Shuckburgh Hewett.

Cadet Royal Artillery 1761, Ensign 70th Foot 1762, Lieutenant 70th Foot 1764, Captain 70th Foot  1775, Major 43rd Foot 1781, Lieutenant Colonel 43rd Foot 1787, Brevet Colonel 1794,  Major General 1796, Lieutenant General 1803, General 1813.

Early Service: West Indies 1764-1774 serving as Aide-de-Camp and Brigade Major. North America 1775-1783, and as Deputy Quartermaster-General West Indies 1782. 

Service 1793-1815: Adjutant-General Ireland 1791-1798, Inspector-General of the Recruiting Service on Home Staff 1799, Inspector of The Army of Reserve and on  Home Staff 1803, Barrackmaster-General 1803-1806, Commander-in-Chief India 1807-1811, Commander-in-Chief Ireland 1813-1816.

GCB 1820. Created a baronet 1813.

Lieutenant Colonel Commandant and Colonel 92nd Foot 1793-1795,  Colonel-Commandant 2nd  Battalion 5th Foot 1799-1800, Colonel of the 61st Foot 1800-1840.
