Ensign 1st Foot Guards 1758, Lieutenant & Captain 1st Foot Guards 1762, Captain-Lieutenant & Lieutenant Colonel 1st Foot Guards 1776, Captain & Lieutenant Colonel 1st Foot Guards 1776, 3rd Major 1st Foot Guards 1784, 1st  Major 1st Foot Guards 1789, Regimental Lieutenant Colonel 1st Foot Guards 1792-1794, Brevet Colonel 1781, Major General 1790, Lieutenant General 1797, General 1802.

Early Service: Continent Seven Years War 1758-1762,  .North America 1781-1783 and prisoner of war 1781-1783.

Service 1793-1815: Flanders 1793-1795, Ireland 1798-1800, Commander-in-Chief India 1800-1805 and Third Mahratta War 1803-1805, Commander-in-Chief Bengal Presidency India 1805, Provincial Commander-in-Chief India 1805-1807.

ADC to the King 1781. MP 1790-1802.  Created Baron Lake 1804 and Viscount Lake 1807

Colonel of the 53rd Foot 1794-1796, 73rd Foot 1796-1800,  80th Foot 1800-1808.
