Maitland, Thomas (10 March 1760 - 17 January 1824)

Son of the 7th Earl of Lauderdale and older brother of General William Mordaunt Maitland.

Ensign 25th Foot 1777, Lieutenant 7th Foot 1778, Captain 78th Foot* 1778,  Major 62nd Foot 1790, Lieutenant Colonel 62nd Foot 1794,  Colonel West Indies 1797, Brevet Colonel 1798,  Brigadier General West Indies 1797, 1798, Brigadier General Mediterranean 1800,  Major General West Indies 1799, Major General 1805, Lieutenant General Ceylon 1806, Lieutenant General 1811.

*renamed 72nd Foot 1786.

Early Service: Brigade Major India 1784-1790.

Service 1793-1815: Quartermaster-General West Indies 1797-1799,  Mediterranean 1800,  Governor of Ceylon 1805-1811, Commander-in-Chief and Governor Malta 1813-1824.

Later Service: Lord High Commissioner Ionian Isles and Commander-in-Chief Mediterranean 1816-1824.

GCB 1815. GCH 1817. GCMG 1818. MP 1790-1796, 1802-1805, 1812-1813.

Colonel of the 10th West India Regiment 1798-1802,  5th Reserve [later Garrison]  Battalion 1803-1805,  3rd Garrison Battalion 1805-1807,  4th West India Regiment 1807-1811, 10th Foot 1811-1824.
