Mulgrave, Henry Phipps 1st Earl of (14 February 1755 - 7 April 1831)

Son of 1st Baron Mulgrave.  Brother of Captain Constantine Phipps 2nd Baron Mulgrave  RN, Captain Charles Phipps RN and General Edmund Phipps.

Ensign 1st Foot Guards 1775,  Lieutenant & Captain 1st Foot Guards 1778, Major 85th Foot* 1779, Lieutenant Colonel 88th Foot* 1780, Lieutenant Colonel 45th Foot 1782,  Captain & Lieutenant Colonel 1st Foot Guards 1783, Brevet Colonel 1790, Brigadier General Toulon 1793,  Major General Toulon 1793, Major General 1794, Lieutenant General 1801, General 1809.

*disbanded 1783. 

Early Service: North America 1776-1778, West Indies 1780.

Service 1793-1815: Toulon 1793-1794, Flushing 1794,  on Home Staff 1796-1799, with Military Mission to Russian and Austrian Army  1799,  on Home Staff 1803-1804, Principal Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs 1805-1806, First Lord of the Admiralty 1807-1810, Master General of the Ordnance 1810-1818. 

MP 1784-1790, 1790-1794. Lord Lieutenant E Riding Yorkshire 1807.

GCB 1820.  Succeeded as  3rd Baron Mulgrave 1792. Created 1st Earl of Mulgrave 1812.

Colonel of the 31st Foot 1793-1831.
