Stuart, Charles (January 1753  - 25 March 1801)

4th son of  John Stuart 3rd Earl of Bute, Prime Minister.  Brother of Lieutenant Colonel James Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie.

Ensign 37th Foot 1768, Lieutenant 7th Foot 1770, Captain 35th Foot 1773, Major 43rd Foot 1775, Lieutenant Colonel 26th Foot 1777,  Lieutenant Colonel 101st Foot* 1781, Lieutenant Colonel 26 Foot 1781, Brevet Colonel 1782, Half-pay 1784,  Major General 1793, Lieutenant General Mediterranean 1794, Lieutenant General 1798,  General Portugal 1796.

*disbanded 1785.

Early Service: North America 1775- 1781.

Service 1793-1815: Commander-in-Chief  Mediterranean 1794-1798 and at Corsica 1794,  as Commander-in-Chief Portugal 1796-1798, captured Minorca 1798 and Governor of Minorca 1799-1801 also commanding on Sicily 1800 and Malta 1800. 

MP 1776-1794, 1796-1801. KB 1799.

Colonel of the 68th Foot 1794-1795, 26th Foot 1795-1801.
