2nd Lieutenant 23rd Foot 1778, 1st  Lieutenant 23rd Foot 1779, Captain 100th Foot* 1785, Captain 23rd Foot 1785, Lieutenant and Captain 2nd Foot Guards 1790, Captain and Lieutenant Colonel 2nd Foot Guards 1793, Brevet Major 1793, Lieutenant Colonel 63rd Foot 1799, Brevet Colonel 1797, Major General 1803, Lieutenant General 1810, General 1821. 

* disbanded 1785.

Early Service: North America 1779-1783 and prisoner of war 1781-1783.

Service 1793-1815: Aide-de-Camp Flanders 1793-1794. Deputy Adjutant-General to the Forces 1796-1799. Adjutant-General to the Forces 1799-1815.

Other Service: Adjutant-General to the Forces 1816-20. Lieutenant Governor Chelsea Hospital 1820-1826.

GCB 1815. GCH 1817. Created a Baronet 1818.

Colonel of the 5th West India Regiment 1800-1806, 14th Foot 1806-1826.
