Bentinck, Lord William Henry, Cavendish- (14 September 1774 - 17 June 1839)

2nd son of 3rd Duke of Portland, Prime Minister 1807-1809. Older brother of Lieutenant-Colonel Lord William Charles Cavendish-Bentinck and Major General Lord Frederick Cavendish-Bentinck.

Styled Lord William Bentinck 1774 - 1839.

Ensign 2nd Foot Guards 1791, Captain-Lieutenant 2nd Dragoons 1792,  Captain 11th Light Dragoons 1793, Major 28th Foot 1794, Lieutenant Colonel 24th Light Dragoons* 1794,  Half-pay, Brevet Colonel 1798, Major General 1805, Lieutenant General Peninsula 1809, Lieutenant General Mediterranean 1811, Lieutenant General 1811, General 1825.  * disbanded 1802. 

Early service: Aide-de-Camp Flanders 1793-1795,  Liaison officer Austro-Russian Army Italy and Switzerland 1799-1801, Egypt 1801. Governor of Madras Presidency 1803-1807.

Portugal & Spain: Commanded a brigade Portugal 1808 and a brigade  Spain 1808-1809 and at Corunna 1809.

Peninsular War: Twice declined to serve in the peninsula 1809. Commanded on East Coast of Spain 1813.

Other Service: Commander-in-Chief Sicily 1811-1814. Captured Genoa, Italy 1814. Governor-General of Bengal Presidency 1827-1833. Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief India 1833-1835.

Aide-de-Camp to the King 1798. MP 1796-1802, 1812-1814, 1816-26 and 1836-1839. KB 1813. GCB 1815. GCH 1817. Colonel of 20th Light Dragoons 1810-1813,  11th Light Dragoons 1813-1839.
