Gentleman Cadet Royal Military Academy Woolwich 1772, 2nd Lieutenant Royal Artillery 1777, 1st Lieutenant Royal Artillery 1779, Captain-Lieutenant Royal Artillery 1791, Captain Royal Artillery 1794, Captain G Troop Royal Horse Artillery 1802, Brevet Major 1798, Major Royal Artillery 1803, Brevet Lieutenant Colonel  1803, Lieutenant Colonel Royal Artillery 1804,  Colonel Royal Artillery 1809, Brigadier General on the Staff 1811,  Major General Peninsula 1811, Major General 1812.

Early service: Flanders 1794-1796, Mediterranean 1800, Brigade Major Egypt 1801.

Peninsular War: Commanded Royal Artillery October 1811 - August 1812. Returned home on promotion 1812.
