Clinton, Henry (9 March 1771 - 11 December 1829)

2nd son of General Sir Henry Clinton. Younger brother of Lieutenant General Sir William Henry Clinton.

Ensign 18th Foot 1787, Half-pay, Ensign 11th Foot 1788, Ensign 1st Foot Guards 1789, Captain 15th Foot 1791, Lieutenant  & Captain 1st Foot Guards 1792, Brevet Major 1794, Major 30th 1795, Lieutenant Colonel 66th Foot 1795, Captain & Lieutenant Colonel 1st Foot Guards 1796, Brevet Colonel 1803, Brigadier General on the Staff 1808-1810, Major General 1810, Lieutenant General Peninsula 1813, Lieutenant General 1814.

Early service: Volunteered as Lieutenant with a Brunswick Corps The Netherlands 1788-1789, Aide-de-Camp

Flanders 1793-1795 and wounded, West Indies 1795-1796, prisoner of war 1796-1797, Aide-de-Camp

Ireland 1797-1798, Helder 1799, Liaison officer Austro-Russian Army Italy and Switzerland 1799, Assistant Adjutant General 1801, Adjutant General India 1802-1805,  Military Attaché to Russian Army Austerlitz 1805, in Sicily 1806-1807. Commanded a brigade Sweden 1808.

Portugal & Spain: Adjutant General of the army in Portugal and Spain 1808-1809 and at Corunna 1809.

Peninsular War: Commanded 6th Division February 1812 - January 1813, June - July 1813 and October 1813 - April 1814.

Other service: Adjutant General Ireland 1809-1812. Declined command of a division in War of 1812 with a planned expedition to North America 1814. Inspector General of Infantry 1814. On staff  in The Netherlands 1814-1815.  Commanded 2nd Division at Waterloo and during campaign in France 1815. Commanded 2nd Division Army of Occupation France 1815-1817.

KB 1813. GCB 1815. GCH 1816. MP 1808-1818. Colonel Commandant of 1st Battalion, 60th Foot 1813-1815, Colonel of  3rd Foot 1815-1829.
