Cotton, Stapleton (14 November 1773 - 21 April 1865)

2nd son of the 5th Baronet. Older brother of Colonel Lynch Cotton.

2nd Lieutenant 23rd Foot 1790, Lieutenant 77th Foot 1791, 1st Lieutenant 23rd Foot 1791, Captain 6th Dragoons Guards 1793, Major 59th Foot 1794, Lieutenant Colonel 25th Light Dragoons* 1794, Lieutenant Colonel 16th Light Dragoons 1800, Brevet Colonel 1800, Brigadier General on the Staff 1803-1805, Major General 1805, Lieutenant General Peninsula 1809,  Lieutenant General 1812, General 1825, Field Marshal 1855.  * renumbered 22nd Light Dragoons 1802.

Early service: Flanders 1794, Cape of Good Hope 1796, India 1796-1800 and at Seringapatam 1799. On the staff in Ireland 1803-1805. Cavalry brigade for Hanover 1805, but never embarked.

Portugal & Spain: Commanded a cavalry brigade in Portugal 1808-1809. 

Peninsular War: Commanded a cavalry brigade April - October 1809, second-in-command of the cavalry October 1809 - April 1810,  commanded 1st Division April - June 1810. Commanded all cavalry in peninsula June 1810 - January 1811 and April - June 1811. Commanded both the 1st Cavalry Division and also superintended all the cavalry June 1811 - July 1812 and October - December 1812. Commanded all the cavalry again June 1813 - April 1814.  Wounded at Salamanca July 1812.

Other service: Commanded cavalry in France after Waterloo 1815 and cavalry of British Contingent Army of Occupation France 1815-1816. Governor and Commander-in-Chief Barbados 1816-1820. Commander-in-Chief Ireland 1822-1825. Commander-in-Chief India 1825-1830 and captured Fortress of Bhurtpore India 1826. Constable of the Tower 1852-1865.

Change name to Stapleton-Cotton 1827. Succeeded as 6th Baronet 1809. Created Baron Combermere 1814. Created Viscount Combermere 1826.

MP 1806-1814. KB 1812. GCB 1815. GCH 1817. KSI 1861.  Colonel of  20th Light Dragoons 1813-1818, 3rd Dragoons 1821-1829, 1st Life Guards 1829-1865.
