Houston, William (10 August 17668 April 1842)

Sometimes spelt as Houstoun.

Ensign 31st Foot 1781, Lieutenant Independent Company 1782, Captain 77th Foot * 1783, Half-pay, Captain 19th Foot 1785,  Major 19th Foot 1794, Lieutenant Colonel 84th Foot 1795, Lieutenant Colonel 58th Foot 1795, Brevet Colonel 1802, Brigadier General on Staff 1804-1810,  Major General 1809, Lieutenant General 1814, General 1837. * disbanded c.1783.

Early service: West Indies, Gibraltar, Flanders 1794-1796, Minorca 1798, Mediterranean 1800, Egypt 1801-1802, Malta 1802, on Home Staff 1804-1809,  brigade on Walcheren 1809, on Home Staff 1809-1810. 

Peninsular War: Commanded brigade 4th Division January - March 1811. Commanded 7th Division March - August 1811. Invalided home due to ill health 1811. Application to rejoin the army in Peninsula was turned down 1813.

Other service: On Home Staff 1812-1814. Lieutenant Governor of Gibraltar 1831-1835.

KCB 1815. GCB 1831. GCH 1827. Created a baronet 1836. Colonel of  4th Garrison Battalion 1811 - 1814, 2nd Garrison Battalion 1814-1815,  20th Foot 1815-1842.
