Long, Robert Ballard (4 April 1771 - 2 March 1825)

Cornet 1st Dragoon Guards 1791, Lieutenant 1st Dragoon Guards 1793, Captain 1st Dragoon Guards 1794, Major York Rangers* 1797, Lieutenant Colonel Hompesch's Mounted Rifles+ 1798, Lieutenant Colonel York Hussars+ 1800,  Lieutenant Colonel 2nd Dragoon Guards 1803, Lieutenant Colonel 16th Light Dragoons 1805,  Lieutenant Colonel 15th Light Dragoons 1805, Brevet Colonel 1808, Brigadier General on the Staff 1811, Major General 1811, Lieutenant General 1821.  * disbanded 1797. + disbanded 1802.11802802

Early service: Brigade Major Flanders 1793-1796 and a Deputy Adjutant-General 1795, Brigade-Major Home Staff 1796, Ireland 1796-1798.

Portugal & Spain: Appointed  to army staff in Spain 1808-1809. Present at Corunna 1809.

Peninsular War: Commanded a brigade 7th Division March 1811 and appointed to command cavalry with Hill's detached corps March 1811 - May 1811. Superseded by a senior officer May 1811. Commanded  cavalry brigade June - December 1811 and  April 1812 - August 1813 and temporarily(?) the 2nd Cavalry Division December 1811- April 1812.  Left Peninsula late 1813.  

Other service: Adjutant-General on Walcheren 1809.
