Spencer, Brent (1760/1761? - 29 December 1828)

Ensign 15th Foot 1778, Lieutenant 15th Foot 1779, Captain 99th Foot * 1783, Captain-Lieutenant 15th Foot 1783, Captain 15th Foot 1784, Major 13th Foot 1791, Brevet Lieutenant Colonel 1794,  Lieutenant Colonel 115th Foot+ 1794, Lieutenant Colonel 58th Foot 1795, Lieutenant Colonel 40th Foot 1795, Brevet Colonel 1798, Major General 1805,  Lieutenant General Peninsula 1810, Lieutenant General 1811, General 1825.

* disbanded 1784. + disbanded 1795.

Early service: West Indies 1778-1783 and prisoner of war 1782-1783, West Indies 1790-1794, 1795-1798 and Brigadier 1797, Helder 1799, Mediterranean 1800, Egypt 1801-1802, Home Staff 1803-1807, brigade Copenhagen 1807, commanded force Mediterranean and at Gibraltar 1807-1808.

Portugal & Spain: Second-in-command to Wellington's force Portugal and at Vimeiro 1808. Appointed to command Reserve Division army in Portugal 1808. Appointed on staff army for Spain but invalided home due to ill-health 1808.

Peninsular War: Second-in-command in Portugal 1810-1811: commanded 1st Division June 1810- July 1811.  Left Peninsula 1811.

Aide-de-Camp to the King 1798. MP 1815-1818. KB 1809. GCB 1815.  Colonel of 9th Garrison Battalion [later numbered 103rd Foot] 1806-1808, 2nd West India Regiment 1808-1809,  Colonel-Commandant of 2nd Battalion 95th Foot 1809-1816,  of 1st Battalion 95th Foot 1816-1818, Colonel  of 40th Foot 1818-1828.
