Ensign 31st Foot 1763,  Lieutenant 31st Foot 1766, Captain 1st Foot 1768, Major 77th Foot* 1777,   Lieutenant Colonel 68th Foot 1781,  Captain & Lieutenant Colonel 1st Foot Guards 1783, Lieutenant Colonel 66th Foot 1796,  Brevet Colonel 1790, Major General 1794, Lieutenant General Guernsey 1799, Lieutenant General 1801, General 1812. *disbanded c.1783

Early service: Minorca 1768, Flanders 1793-1794, on Home Staff 1795, Lieutenant-Governor of Guernsey 1796-1801, on Home Staff 1802-1806, Lieutenant Governor of Gibraltar 1806-1808.

Portugal & Spain: Commander-in-Chief Portugal 1808. Recalled to face Convention of Cintra Inquiry 1808. 

Knighted 1779. Created a Baronet 1814.  Colonel of 81st Foot, 1797-1798, 37th Foot 1798-1810, 19th Foot 1810-1811, 57th Foot 1811-1830
